As Tropical Storm Helene continues to impact the Southeast U.S., its strong winds and heavy rainfall have led to significant disruptions, particularly in North Carolina. Rutherford County has mandated evacuations for residents in specific areas due to water overtopping the Lake Lure Dam. A recent Facebook update from the county’s Emergency Management reported that while water levels are receding, structural supports of the dam have been compromised.

Emergency Response Efforts

Emergency personnel have conducted over 25 swift water rescues, responding to urgent conditions where water was cresting the dam and flowing over its side walls. Evacuations have been implemented from the dam to Island Creek Road, with sirens sounding downstream to alert residents. Temporary shelters for evacuees have been established at Ingles in Lake Lure.

Flood Warnings and Evacuation Orders

The National Weather Service has warned of “catastrophic flows” affecting the Broad River and downstream areas, prompting further evacuation orders. A comprehensive list of affected roads is available on the Rutherford County Emergency Management Facebook page. Residents are advised to stay indoors if not in evacuation zones, as roads are hazardous due to downed trees and power lines.

Tragic Incidents Amidst the Storm

In addition to the evacuation orders, multiple flood warnings are in effect for counties in Western North Carolina, including Avery and Watauga. The storm’s impact has already resulted in tragic incidents, including a fatal accident in Catawba County and a death in Charlotte due to a fallen tree. Emergency officials continue to assess and respond to the unfolding situation as Helene moves through the region.
